About Us
The Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Tripura plays a pivotal role in advancing the state’s socio-economic development by championing inclusive, equitable, and high-quality higher education. Since its inception in 1947 with the establishment of Maharaja Bir Bikram College in Agartala, the Directorate has expanded its reach to ensure that educational opportunities are available to students across all regions of the state. This expansion began with the inclusion of three private colleges—Ramakrishna Mahavidyalaya in Kailashahar, Ramthakur College in Agartala, and a college in Belonia—which were taken over by the State Government in 1982.
Committed to bridging educational gaps, the Directorate has prioritized setting up institutions in unserved and underserved sub-divisions, districts, and rural areas. As a result, General Degree Colleges have been established in Udaipur, Sonamura, Khowai, Sabroom, Amarpur, Fatikroy, Kamalpur, Dharmanagar, LT Valley, Kanchanpur, Teliamura, Bishalgarh, Mohanpur, Santirbazar, Gandacherra, Khumulwng, and other strategic locations. In recent years, to meet increasing demand, three new colleges were opened in Old Agartala, Kunjaban, and Panisagar in 2022, followed by the inauguration of three more in Ambassa, Kakraban, and Karbook in 2025.
At present, the Directorate oversees a robust network of institutions including 28 General Degree Colleges, 5 Professional Colleges, 6 Polytechnic Institutes, and 1 Engineering Degree College (Tripura Institute of Technology). Additionally, it manages two State Universities—Maharaja Bir Bikram University (MBBU) and the National Law University (NLU). The department also plans to open one Technical University and one Women University in future.
Tripura currently has a total of 90 higher education institutions registered under the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), of which 38 Government institutions, including the two State Universities, fall under the jurisdiction of the Directorate. The state also hosts a growing number of private institutions, comprising 4 Private Universities, 1 Private Engineering College (Techno India), 4 Private General Degree Colleges (Holy Cross, Kathiababa Mission, Rajeshwari Institute of Skill, and Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan), 2 Private B.Ed. Colleges (run by Bhavans), 8 Private Nursing Colleges, 3 Pharmacy Colleges, and 1 Paramedical College, 1 Hotel Management College.
Tripura is further distinguished by its nationally recognized institutions such as the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), NIELIT, CIPET, three Medical Colleges, a Fisheries College, an Agriculture College, a Veterinary College, and several prestigious off-campus centers including the National Forensic University, Sanskrit University, and the National School of Drama (NSD).
As of the academic year 2024–25, total enrolment across the 38 government-managed institutions stands at 77,415 students, with an annual intake expansion of approximately 1,500 to 2,000 students to meet growing demand. According to the latest AISHE Report 2021–22, Tripura has achieved a Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of 20.7, reflecting the proportion of youth enrolled in higher education, and a Gender Parity Index (GPI) of 0.89, indicating ongoing efforts toward gender inclusivity in academic access.
The Directorate remains committed to strengthening infrastructure, elevating educational standards, and ensuring that higher education continues to serve as a transformative force in Tripura’s development. Through visionary leadership and inclusive policies, we are laying the foundation for a knowledge-based, skilled, and empowered society.
